As of yesterday, many entertainment news outlets lit up with stories that Ridley Scott's Prometheus 2 (which begins filming this upcoming January) had officially put Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 on hold for the time being and was purposefully being held back while production on Prometheus 2 continued. The initial report came from Bloody-Disgusting.com, where they claimed an insider close to the Alien 5 project revealed to them the following

Alien 5 is still very much in the works, as Fox remains hot on the idea,” our regular tipster tells us. “Blomkamp continues to work on the script (only an outline existed previously) and refine the tale he is telling. Ridley Scott is still producing, but has insisted on Prometheus 2 being made first.”

Earlier in a previous article, B-D.com insinuated that Alien 5 was going to enter 'development hell' all together and that we may never see the film actually grace the big screen. However as of recent, director Neill Blomkamp himself squashed these notions by replying to a fan on Twitter:

It makes sense that Alien 5 will release after Prometheus 2. With filming set to begin on the Prometheus follow-up beginning this January, Alien 5 will continue to undergo script tweaks until Fox decides on a concrete release date. Filming for Alien 5 will likely begin mid-late 2016 if all goes well.

The good news is that Alien 5 is happening. Our best guess is the film will be set for a release date sometime during the summer of 2018. As more details are released, we'll be sure to keep you updated.

I mentioned this a thread about the subject when it came out about would the movie ever see day of light now... because of Chappie...

I said the movie would most likely be comming out as Scott and Fox liked the idea, and worst case would be they would get another Director but credit Blomkamp with the Story.

But i said that its most likely that Ridley is protecting Prometheus and he would feel that he would want to tell his Story First and if Alien 5 covers anything that may link to Engineers or their Tech (something must have as they got Blomkamp to change some of the Plot of his movie).  Then Ridley would want to get his movie out first so as that any connections with Engineers and their Tech...that Alien 5 would show would be shown after Ridleys Prometheus Sequel...

Ridley protects his projects and this is why he would not be talking much about Prometheus 2 or Alien 5 until way after the release of The Martian as he would not want those movies to take the shine away from that movie....

Which is not what Blomkamp did with Alien 5 by releasing info  etc while promoting Chappie and thus taking the Shine away from that movie.

This 'Ridley is shelving Alien 5 for Prometheus 2' stuff is utterly ridiculous. P2 has arguably been in the works since the story for P1 was being written. That Blomkamp had a perfect script ready to go is highly unlikely. It's gonna take time to make that one worthy no matter what.

Blomkamp's release of concept art was questionably timed to say the least, and even if he does have a truly amazing, fan pleasing story to support the odd idea of resurrecting Ripley and Hicks, the smart money is gonna be on honing the story before sets are built, locations booked, actors cast etc. Vilifying Ridley is absurd, everyone should be thankful he's involved. I've also read over and over that P2 is a sequel 'nobody wants'. I doubt that. P2 is our one chance to see something new and amazing in the Alien universe, whereas Ripley, Hicks and Xenos are not. A5 seems a much more cynical bid for dollars than P2. It shouldn't be rushed.
